Do dogs sense when you are sad?

All my life my 12 yr old beagle has come up to me when i cry. she comes up and comes under my arms when im on the floor crying to comfort me. how does she know? she has saved my life so many times when i was depressed. sometimes i think she's my deceased 13 yr old sister's angel in the form of a dog. I am 22 yrs old right now.

Many dogs can sense emotion. A lot of time by body language. Your posture and stance can say a LOT about how you feel and that's how dogs read you a lot of times. It's possible you also give off a difference in smell, just like when you're scared and your adrenaline's up. Scientifically, that's most likely how. But, that doesn't make it any less amazing when an animal is their to comfort you, knowing something is wrong, and wanting to be there for you in their own way.
