Can you stream a security cam with dial-up?
I want to install a security camera on my property and be able to check it online when on vacation.
Is there some way to do this when I can only get dial-up out here in the boonies?
If so.....what all do I need to buy? (Give me the dummy version. I already have a computer...that's about it.)
Streaming video is impossible on dial-up. The bandwidth requirements are too high. In other word, not enough data can be sent on dial-up to support a live feed. You could right click and do a "save as" for the file. After the file has downloaded at its own pace/speed , you could then save the file and open it to view it. But by the time the file is saved, and then by the time your review the saved file, whatever security issues you see will most likely be several hours old.
I lived with dial-up for years and this is the only way to watch a "streaming" video. If possible you could check with a DSL/Broadband provider (like a satellite provider.) You might also check with the phone company to see if they can reduce the stream to a lower setting. Quality of picture will be terrible but it might support a live feed and you'd be able to make out large images (like a vehicle pulling into a driveway.)
