How do re-decorate, refurbish dining room chairs?
They are OLD. The backs are not straight across the top. They have "knobs". Two have arms (for the head and foot of the table). Therefore slip covers out of the picture. The seat is not upholstered so I cant re-do that. The seat isnt even square its an odd shape so I can even put a cushion.
They were a wedding present to the parents of my boyfriend so buying new ones are out of the question... I am very creative and totally stumped!!!
It sounds like you have some really unique items there!
The only thing I can think of would be to buy some simple, flat seat cushions that are the right size to cover the entire seat in colors that will compliment your other furnishings.
The ones I'm thinking of are usually just a piece of foam like 1/2" thick with as little trim around the edges as you can find.
You might buy a couple extras if you can find them cheap so you have some room for mistakes (I mean... opportunities to improve!)
Then take a pencil / pen and trace from underneath the outline of the seat. Try to draw your line about 1/2-1" out from the edge.
Then you cut the cushion at that line. If there is any trim around the edges of the cushion, don't cut the trim, cut inside of it.
After that, trim the foam in a little further than the fabric... closer to where the actual seat edge was.
Then pick the seam out of the edge where the existing trim is so you can re-use the trim on the edges you had to cut (hopefully not more than maybe one edge, depending on how close you could buy the cushion to the shape of the seat)
Once you have the trim free, sew the cut edge of the cushion back together, either first without the trim and then attach the trim, or if you are tricky, you can do it all at once.
Obviously, if you are a whiz with a sewing machine this will be easy but even if you have never sewn a thing in your life, anybody can manage to stuff some thread of about the right color through a needle and stick it back and forth through the fabric.
It might not turn out perfect but your inlaws will appreciate that you took the time to work with the chairs rather than just ignoring them.
Refinishing them can also be done but depending on how many layers of paint/varnish are already on them, it can be tricky and to strip off the old stuff involves some pretty nasty chemicals, even these days.
